Review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section for answers to commonly asked questions pertaining to applying.
All of the following should be submitted in one application packet by mail.
- Application form
- ONE page essay that addresses the following: why you are pursuing a career in perfusion, what you have done to learn about the field, why Iowa is the right fit for you.
- Prerequisite courses form (All prerequisite coursework must be fully completed by the application deadline of November 1st. Courses that are still in progress or planned for completion after this date, even if prior to matriculation, do not meet the eligibility criteria.)
- Current color photo, sized passport to 4x6, with an unobstructed view of face (no sunglasses, glasses ok)
- Official college transcripts - include original official transcripts in sealed envelope(s) from all post high school educational experience. If college does not mail transcripts, they may email them to perfusion@uiowa.edu.
- Include proof of completed bachelor's degree (Documentation indicating a degree in progress will not be accepted, even if the degree is expected to be completed before matriculation. If your degree will not be completed by the deadline, you will need to wait and apply in the next application cycle.)
- 3 completed applicant references - suggested to have one academic, one personal and one employer reference. Collect these from each reference and place sealed envelopes in the application packet. Letters of reference may be included but our form is required.
- Application fee (non-refundable) of $100 due with application, make check/money order payable to the University of Iowa Perfusion Education Program—do not send cash.
- Documentation of clinical observation
To strengthen your application, we strongly encourage you to observe and document more than the one required cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) case. While a single case is the minimum requirement to apply, submitting documentation of multiple CPB cases can provide a deeper understanding of the profession and significantly enhance your chances of being selected for an interview.- If shadowing/viewing a case is not possible, interview at least one clinical perfusionist and ask about the following:
- Call responsibilities/quality of life
- Clinical responsibilities
- Unique stressors faced by perfusionists
- Job outlook
- Write up your interview and submit in your packet.
- If shadowing/viewing a case is not possible, interview at least one clinical perfusionist and ask about the following:
Be prepared to discuss your shadow experience(s) during the interview process.
The aforementioned items (collected into one packet) mailed to:
