Admission to the UI Carver College of Medicine Perfusion Education Program is competitive.

Each year, the Admissions Committee selects candidates based on a comprehensive review of the following:

  • Academic performance (GPA)
  • Professional background and relevant experience
  • Strength and relevance of references
  • Quality of the application essay
  • Interview performance

We typically accept 4–5 students per year, with undergraduate GPAs ranging from 3.2 to 4.0.

  • Biology (Intro / Human): 
    • 8 credit hours total
      • 7 credit hours of class
      • 1 credit hour of lab
  • Chemistry: 
    • 8 credit hours total
      • 6 credit hours of class
      • 2 credit hours of lab
  • Mathematics: 
    • 4 credit hours 
      • # of credit hour requirement waived with completion of College Calculus course
  • Physics: 
    • 4 credit hours total
      • 3 credit hours of class
      • 1 credit hour of lab
  • Physiology: 
    • 4 credit hours total
      • 3 credit hours of class
      • 1 credit hour of lab
  • Statistics: 
    • 3 credit hours total

All required materials must be submitted together in a single application packet by mail. Incomplete packets will not be considered for review.

Application Materials Description

  • Application form
  • ONE page essay that addresses the following:
    • Why you are pursuing a career in perfusion
    • What you have done to learn about the field
    • Why you believe the University of Iowa is the right fit for you
  • Prerequisite courses form
    • Use this form to list the completed coursework that satisfies the prerequisite requirements
    • All coursework must be fully completed by the application deadline: November 1
    • Courses in progress or planned for completion after November 1 are not eligible, even if they are scheduled before matriculation
  • Submit a recent color photo, sized between passport and 4x6, with an unobstructed view of your face
    • No sunglasses; glasses are permitted
  • Official college transcripts
    • Include sealed, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
    • Transcripts must be included in your application packet in sealed envelopes
    • If a school does not provide paper transcripts, they may be sent electronically via Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse to: perfusion@uiowa.edu
  • Include proof of completed bachelor's degree
    • Include a copy of your diploma as proof of a completed bachelor’s degree
    • Documentation indicating a degree is "in progress" will not be accepted—even if the degree is expected to be completed before matriculation.
    • If your degree is not completed by the application deadline, you are not eligible to apply and must wait until the next application cycle.
  • 3 completed applicant references
    • Submit three completed reference forms, each in a sealed envelope, included in your application packet.
    • Choose references who can speak directly to your skills, experience, and qualifications—especially in healthcare or perfusion settings.
    • Strong references provide specific examples of your competencies, such as:
      • Critical thinking
      • Teamwork in clinical settings
      • Technical or scientific aptitude
    • While general traits like being "reliable" are positive, we value insight into your readiness for a rigorous, patient-centered program.
    • Letters of reference may be included but our form is required.
  • Application fee
    • Include a non-refundable $100 application fee with your packet.
    • Make checks or money orders payable to: University of Iowa Perfusion Education Program
    • Do not send cash.
  • Documentation of clinical observation
    • While one case is the minimum requirement, you are strongly encouraged to observe and document more than the required one cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) case to strengthen your application.
    • If direct observation is not possible, interview at least one clinical perfusionist and include the following in your written summary:
      • Call responsibilities / quality of life
      • Clinical responsibilities
      • Unique stressors of the profession
      • Job outlook
      • Write up your interview and submit in your packet.

Be prepared to discuss your shadow experience(s) during the interview process.
